Backel Soars to Javelin Final

BEIJING, China — Former University of Oklahoma athlete Danny McFarlane advanced from the prelims of the men's 400-meter hurdles Friday morning at the Olympic Games in Beijing.  Competing for Jamaica, McFarlane recorded the third-fastest time of the event's prelims with a time of 48.86 in the second heat.  McFarlane advances to the event's semifinals, scheduled to start Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m. CST.

Laverne Jones-Ferrette, a former athlete from OU, advanced from the first round of competition in the women's 100-meter dash Friday night.  Competing for the Virgin Islands, Jones-Ferrette took third in the event's 10th heat with a time of 11.41 to advance to Saturday morning's second round at 7:35 a.m.

Jamaica's Kerron Stewart took first in Jones-Ferrette's heat with a time of 11.28 while Norway's Ezinne Okparaebo finished second in 11.32. 

Nigeria's Oludamola Osayomi recorded the first round's fastest time of 11.13.

McFarlane took second in the second heat behind USA's Angelo Taylor who crossed the line with a time of 48.67.  McFarlane's fellow countryman, Markino Buckley, recorded the prelims fastest time with a personal-best 48.65.

McFarlane is the reigning silver medalist in the men's 400-meter hurdles and entered this year's games as the No. 5 athlete in the world with a time of 48.39.  USA's Kerron Clement came into the Games as the world's top-ranked athlete in the event with a time of 47.79.  Clement won the fourth heat with a time of 49.42.
