EUGENE, Ore. —  Five athletes from the University of Oklahoma track and field program were in action Friday night at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene.  Two of the five, Leslie Cole and Marcus Pugh, advanced to further competition in their quest to become OU's latest Olympian to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Pugh opened the Oklahoma action with his Olympic Trials debut in the prelims of the men's 200-meter dash.  Pugh's time of 20.99 was sixth in the second heat and 22nd overall, but quick enough to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Nike's Shawn Crawford posted the prelims top time, 20.18.

After spending the last couple of days resting in Eugene, Cole and Scottesha Miller returned to the Hayward Field track to take part in the women's 200-meter dash prelims.  Running in the second heat, Cole recorded a time of 23.37 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.  The time was fifth in the heat and 21st overall.

With the top 24 finishers moving on to the quarterfinals, Miller was unable to advance with a 29th-place finish, running 23.92.  Reebok's Shalonda Solomon led all competitors with a time of 22.51.

Shardae Boutte and Tydree Lewis took the runway of the men's triple jump with great expectations but were unable to record a long enough distance for Sunday's finals. Lewis finished 15th with a top jump of 51 feet and 11.75 inches (15.84 meters) while Boutte took 18th with a distance of 51-7.75 (15.74).  Nike's Walter Davis jumped the furthest Friday, 55-3.00 (16.84).

Boutte entered the competition with the eighth-longest qualifying jump of 55-0.00 (16.76), set at the NCAA Midwest Regional on May 31.  Lewis, the runner-up in the event at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships, had the 12th-best qualifying mark of 54-2.50 (16.52).

Saturday's action featuring Oklahoma athletes begins at 11:50 a.m. PST with the quarterfinals of the women's 200-meter dash.  The event's semifinals are slated to begin at 2:05 p.m.

Pugh returns to action Saturday in the quarterfinals of the men's 200 at at 12:10 p.m. PST with the semifinals scheduled to begin at 2:29 p.m.
