COLUMBUS, Ohio — First-year Oklahoma athlete Kevin Schwab narrowly missed advancing to the Junior World Championships with a third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run at the 2008 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The event features the nation's top athletes under the age of 20.
Schwab, who redshirted during both the indoor and outdoor track and field season, took third with a time of 31:07.28. Daniel Dunbar of Southern Illinois took first with a time of 30:34.09 while Donald Cabral, competing unattached, took second with a time of 30:50.28.
The 2007 Oklahoma Runner Male Athlete of the Year took second in the event at last year's championships.
Jalesa Walker, who just completed her freshman year at OU, finished 13th in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.84. Walker's season-best time during the 2008 outdoor season, 24.22, came on April 12 in Norman.
Karen Shump, an incoming freshman for the Oklahoma program, competes Sunday in the women's shot put at 3:15 p.m CST.
A number of Oklahoma athletes will head to Eugene, Ore., next week for the 2008 USA Track & Field Olympic Trials, June 27-July 6.
