Sooners Take on Nation's Best

NORMAN, Okla. -- A group of University of Oklahoma Track & Field athletes head north this week for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Twelve Sooners and two relays will compete in the four-day event at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
Three OU athletes and one relay enter the meet ranked in the nation's top 10 of their respective events. Shardae Boutte is the lone male, ranked first in the men's triple jump. Boutte's leapt a program-best jump of 55 feet (16.76 meters) at the NCAA Midwest Regional where the senior's classmate, Tydree Lewis, also qualified for the national meet with a distance of 52-11.50 (16.14). Lewis finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Leslie Cole leads the way on the women's side as the nation's seventh-best athlete in the women's 400-meter dash. Cole also advanced to this year's NCAA Indoor Championships in the event where the junior earned All-America honors.
Cole also runs on the women's 4x100-meter relay that is ranked ninth nationally and was awarded an at-large selection after missing an automatic selection with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The relay saw anchor leg Scottesha Miller suffer a hamstring injury in the event's prelims before being replaced by Ti'Anca Mock in the Regional final.

Latoya Greaves, in her first year on the Division I level, is 10th in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.03. The Big 12 champion in the event, Greaves and teammate Latoya Heath will look for Oklahoma's first-ever All-America honors in the event. Heath is the nation's 23rd best in the event.
On the men's side of the hurdles, Sheldon Leith will also be looking for OU's first-ever All-America honor event in the 110-meter hurdles. Leith enters the meet ranked 23rd nationally.
Marcus Pugh is one of two Oklahoma athletes competing in two individual events. The senior from Tulsa, Okla., will run in both the 100- and 200-meter dash, ranking 11th nationally in both. On the women's side, Toni Smith will take to the runway in both the long and triple jump.
Greaves and Cole are also slated to see action on the women's 4x400-meter relay, ranked 18th nationally.
Jessica Eldridge will close out her decorated Oklahoma career searching for a fourth All-America honor as she competes in the 1,500-meter run.
Adrian Wiltshire leapt a season-best distance of 25-2.50 (7.68) in the long jump to finish third at the NCAA Midwest Regional and qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Jamaican nicknamed "Strydex' for his long strides enters the meet 22nd nationally.
At-large selections in the high jump and javelin, respectively, Paul Gill and Amy Backel, will both be on the hunt for All-America honors in a year of firsts. Gill is in his first year of competition at Oklahoma after transferring from Glendale Community College while Backel is in her first year as a full-time thrower after spending the early part of her Oklahoma career as a multi-event athlete.
