NORMAN, Okla. - Led by freshman Wendy Trott's two home runs, the No. 9 Oklahoma softball team (20-5) added another win on Sunday as it run ruled Drake (9-10), 8-0, in five innings in the OU Worth Invitational.
The Sooners will close out their tournament with the second game of the doubleheader against McNeese State, which started at approximately 3:30 p.m. In addition to Trott's offense, OU starter D.J. Mathis was solid on defense as she threw a one-hitter in the complete game effort and tied her career high with nine strikeouts. Mathis also didn't give up any walks as she improved to 15-2 on the year.
Trott highlighted the Sooner offense with her two home runs that tied an OU single game record held by 34 other Sooners. The rookie went 2-for-2 with four RBI while Haley Anderson and Samantha Ricketts added an RBI each.
Oklahoma wasted no time getting on the board as Traci Dickenson led off the first and reached on an error by the Drake shortstop. However, Dickenson was caught stealing on the next play for the first out of the inning. Next, Savannah Long was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Amber Flores' double to left field. Cleanup batter Ricketts pounded a sacrifice fly to center field to score Long as OU led 1-0 after the first frame.
Trott sparked the Sooners in the second with her two-run homer over the left field fence that also brought Susan Ogden across the plate, who reached on a leadoff walk. It marked Trott's second home run of the season as OU took the 3-0 advantage.
The freshman did it again in the third as she pounded another two-run homer down the right field line to give OU the 5-0 lead. The home run knocked Drake starter Jenna Delong out of the game as Mandy Osborn came in for relief with no outs in the fourth. However, Oklahoma couldn't add any more runs in the frame.
Delong fell to 2-3 on the season after giving up five runs on five hits in three innings of work.
Oklahoma added more in the fifth as Long led off with a bunt single and Flores followed that with a walk. Next, Ricketts reached on an error by the Drake second baseman that scored two runs as OU took the 7-0 lead. Ricketts moved to third on Vandever's ground out to the second baseman, which marked the first out of the inning. However, freshman Haley Anderson followed that with an RBI single up the middle that scored Ricketts and ended the game in a run rule.
