OU Closes with Four All-Americans

NORMAN, Okla. -- Four University of Oklahoma athletes closed out the 2008 indoor track and field season receiving All-America honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Sunday.
Shardae Boutte (triple jump), Sheldon Leith (60-meter hurdles) and Tydree Lewis (triple jump) all garnered honors on the men's side while Leslie Cole (400-meter dash) claimed the lone women's honor to give the program 325 total All-America honors. In Martin Smith's two-and-a-half years at Oklahoma, OU athletes have earned 28 All-America honors.
All three men recorded top-eight finishes in their respective events to earn the distinction and help the men's team finish 15th Saturday at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Lewis posted a school record mark en route to a second-place finish in the triple jump while Boutte finished seventh. Prior to the 2008 NCAA Championships, Oklahoma had just one other athlete claim All-America honors in the event as Jerome Douglas did so in 1995 and 1997. Leith took sixth in the men's 60-meter hurdles to become OU's first All-American in the event.
OU recorded its 15th-place finish with 13 points courtesy of Boutte (2), Lewis (8) and Leith (3). Only six points separated a number of teams as No. 8 Florida finished with 19 points. Arizona State won the NCAA team title with 44 points.

Cole finished ninth in the women's 400-meter dash but received the honor as the USTFCCCA awards the honor to the top-eight finishers and extends further to displace non-U.S. citizens.
Top-eight finishers Trish Bartholomew of Alabama and Kineke Alexander of Iowa do not hold U.S. citizenship allowing Cole and Latonya Loche of Tennessee to also earn All-America honors.
It marked the third All-America honor for Cole after receiving the distinction as a member of the indoor distance medley relay and the 4x100 relay in 2007.
The 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be aired on a tape-delay broadcast by ESPN2 Thursday, March 20, at 3 p.m. CDT.
The four All-Americans and the rest of the Oklahoma Track and Field program now turns their attention to the outdoor season, beginning Saturday, March 22, with the Tulsa Duels.
