PALM SPRINGS -Junior pitcher D.J. Mathis threw a one-hit shutout as the No. 6 Oklahoma softball team downed No. 18 Georgia, 3-0, Sunday morning in the finale of the Palm Springs Classic.

The Sooners improved to 12-4 and finished with a 3-2 record in the Palm Springs Classic after OU knocked off Georgia, No. 25 San Diego State and Pacific while falling to No. 12 Stanford and Oregon.  Georgia fell to 12-4 on the season.

Mathis pushed her record to 8-1 after throwing her fourth shutout and seventh complete game of the season.  The junior lefty only gave up one hit and one walk while striking out eight Bulldogs.  Mathis owned a 2-1 record on the weekend after posting a 0.65 ERA while only allowing two earned runs in 21.2 innings pitched and striking out 20.

Offensively, OU catcher Lindsey Vandever was the spark for the Sooners as her two-run homer in the bottom of the second gave OU the lead it would never lose.  Vandever went 2-for-3 with two RBI and was OU's top offensive player in the tournament as she owned a .615 batting average with three home runs and seven RBI.  She also led the team with a 1.385 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.

In addition to Vandever's two hits against Georgia,  Traci Dickenson added an RBI single and Amber Flores added OU's only other hit.

Vandever got the Sooners going in the bottom of the second as she pounded a two-run homer over the center field fence that also scored Dickenson, who reached on an error.  An out later, freshman Wendy Trott ripped a shot to left field, but the Georgia left fielder made a diving catch at the fence to save a home run and record the second out of the frame.   Jessica Legendre struck out to end inning, but the Sooners owned the 2-0 lead heading into the third frame.

Georgia threatened in the third as Victoria Sanders was hit by a pitch with one out.  Following another Mathis strikeout, Megan Wiggins hit a bloop single to right field as the Bulldogs had runners at the corners.  However, Mathis retired the next batter as the Sooners held on to the 2-0 advantage.

Oklahoma gained momentum in the sixth as Flores notched a one-out single to right field and Samantha Ricketts followed with a walk.  Dickenson put another run on the board as she recorded an infield RBI single that gave OU the 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Georgia pitcher Norie Glazebrook made her first appearance of the season and fell to 0-1 on the year.  She allowed two earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six.

The Sooners will return home for a five-game home stand that begins with a 4 p.m. contest against Tulsa on Wednesday at the OU Softball Complex.   Oklahoma will follow that with the Residence Inn Invitational (March 1-2) as it will host North Texas and Memphis in a two-day tournament at the OU Softball Complex.
