NORMAN, Okla. — The incoming University of Oklahoma men's track and field recruiting class was recently bestowed with a top-10 ranking by Track & Field News, coming in at No. 9 nationally.
OU head coach Martin Smith's fourth class is bolstered by two Track & Field News All-Americans in Ben Latham, who competes in the javelin, and distance runner Kevin Williams. OU is one of only three Big 12 Conference schools to bring in two male Track & Field News All-Americans. Williams is a seven-time state champion from Colorado while Latham is a three-time Connecticut state champion who finished second in the javelin at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals.
On the women's side OU is one of just four Big 12 programs to have a Track & Field News All-American signee as thrower Karen Shump made the move to Norman. Shump is a two-time member of the USA Today All-USA Track & Field Team, one of just two juniors to be named in 2007, and made history as the first-ever female to become a four-time Pennsylvania Class AAA outdoor state shot put champion.
OU welcomes 28 newcomers, 20 on the men's side and eight on the women's, from 11 different states across the nation. Eight of the 28 Oklahoma newcomers are transfers. Included in the transfers are Chad Radgowski (2007 SEC Champion/All-American at LSU), Justin Gunn (2008 All-American at Ole Miss), Neelon Greenwood (2008 California Junior College triple jump champion) and K.P. Singh (2008 California Junior College hammer throw/discus champion).
The Sooners open the 2009 season Jan. 9 in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Arkansas Invitational. OU will host three home indoor meets, up from two in 2008, beginning with the J.D. Martin Duals on Jan. 31 inside the Mosier Indoor Facility.
