OSAKA, Japan - It was a busy day for sprinters with University of Oklahoma ties at the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships Tuesday as one current and two former Sooners took to the track.
Danny McFarlane placed fifth in the final of the 400-meter hurdles. The Jamaican ran 48.59 after starting with the disadvantage of running the outside in lane 9.
American Kerron Clement posted a world-leading 47.61 to claim gold over defending world champion Felix Sanchez, whose season best of 48.01 was not nearly enough to repeat.
OU senior Jacobi Mitchell was sixth in his preliminary heat and advanced on time after running the 200 meters in 20.81. Mitchell failed to advance from the quarterfinal, however, after running 21.17 - last in his heat - to finish 30th overall.
American Tyson Gay, who won the world title in the 100-meter dash, was the overall leader entering the semifinals with a quarterfinal run of 20.08.
Michael Blackwood was the final athlete to advance from the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash, running 45.44 for fifth in his heat. The Jamaica will have a tough assignment trying to advance to the finals as he will face off against U.S. champion Angelo Taylor and a host of others Wednesday.
Former Sooner Laverne Jones begins her world title quest in the women's 200-meter dash Wednesday.
