OSAKA, Japan - Former Sooner Danny McFarlane will run for gold at the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships after qualifying Sunday for the finals of the men's 400-meter hurdles.
McFarlane ran a season best 48.32, finishing third in his semi-final heat, to qualify for the eight-man final. His .159 recation time off the gun was the best of any qualifying hurdler.
The 35-year-old Jamaican will have a tough assignment, however, after drawing lane 9 for Tuesday's final race. McFarlane's personal best in the race is 48.00.
Poland's Marek Plawgo enters the finals as the preliminary leader with a semifinal run of 48.18.
McFarlane, who is racing at the meet for a seventh time, is one of four with Oklahoma ties at the World Championships. Fellow Jamaican Michael Blackwood, U.S. Virgin Islands native Laverne Jones and current OU senior Jacobi Mitchell of the Bahamas all qualified for the meet.
Blackwood (400-meter dash) and Mitchell (200-meter dash) take to the track beginning Tuesday, Aug. 28. Jones (200-meter dash) begins her quest for gold Wednesday, Aug. 29.
