RIO DE JANEIRO -- Former University of Oklahoma track and field star Aldwyn Sappleton ran sixth in the men's 800-meter run final at the Pan American Games Saturday.
Sappleton, the Jamaican national champion in the event, covered the two laps of Stadium Jõao Havelange in 1 minute, 47.14 seconds -- the third-best effort of his career.
Yeimer Lopez of Cuba broke the meet record en route to victory with a 1:44.58 run.
Kleberson Davide (1:45.47) and Fabiano Peçanha (1:45.54), both of Brazil, were second and third, respectively.
Peçanha fired out to a quick pace, leading the first lap in 51.28, but faded over the final 400 meters to a charging Lopez.
Sappleton ran a personal best 1:46.87 in his semifinal heat Friday, surpassing the Olympic qualifying standard of 1:47.00.
The top four finishers in Saturday's final were under the Olympic standard.
Sappleton's run concludes participation by current and former Sooners in the Pan American Games.
OU junior Jacobi Mitchell and the rest of the Bahamas' 4x100-meter relay squad did not run in Saturday's final despite qualifying for the main event Friday.
Earlier in the week, OU alum Laverne Jones of the U.S. Virgin Islands picked up a pair of seventh-place results in the women's 100- and 400-meter dashes and Mitchell finished 16th in the men's 200.
Outside of the track, former OU volleyball star Laura Tomes helped Team USA win the bronze medal July 19.
