RIO DE JANEIRO -- University of Oklahoma junior Jacobi Mitchell helped the Bahamas sprint relay to the finals while OU alum Aldwyn Sappleton is poised for a medal finish at the Pan American Games after action Friday.
Mitchell anchored the Bahamas' 4x100-meter relay that included Shamar Sands, Troy McIntosh and Adrian Griffith to a 40.05-second result in its qualifying heat, placing third and earning an automatic spot in the final round where it will be seeded eighth.
Canada finished as the preliminary leader with a run of 38.81. Brazil (38.83) and the United States (38.93) were second and third, respectively.
The men's 4x100-meter relay final runs Saturday at 4:35 p.m. Central inside Stadium Jõao Havelange.
OU alum Aldwyn Sappleton of Jamaica continued his stellar summer, running third fastest in the men's 800-meter run semifinals in a personal best 1:46.84, his first career run under the 1:47 barrier - the minimum Olympic qualifying standard.

Sappleton, who claimed this year's Jamaican national 800-meter title, positioned himself for a medal-earning finish in Saturday's final round.
Cuba's Yeimer Lopez (1:46.69) was the preliminary leader. Brazil's Fabiano Peçanha (1:46.73) was second fastest.
The men's 800-meter run final starts at 2:45 p.m. Central.
The Pan American Games have been hosted once every four years since 1951 as a competition between national athletes from North American, South American, Central America and the Caribbean. A total of 41 sports will be contested at the 2007 Games.
