NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma track and field program announced the promotion of Dana Boone to Associate Head Women's Coach. Head coach Martin Smith made the announcement today.
"I'm very pleased to honor Dana's commitment to the OU track and field program," Smith said. "Certainly, she has proven that she is one of the top track coaches in the nation and her outstanding efforts were vital to our successful performances this season.
"Without a doubt, her influence will be essential in developing our men's and women's programs into Big 12 Conference and national powers over the coming years."
Boone completed her second season with the Sooners in 2007, one of the team's best ever, as she helped direct the men to Big 12 outdoor and Midwest Region championships and the women to its best finishes ever at the conference's indoor and outdoor championships.
"I am truly honored to be named Associate Head Women's Coach," Boone said. "I would like to thank Coach Smith and the administration for supporting me and allowing me this opportunity.
"Oklahoma is truly a great place to work and it is exciting to be a part of this great track and field program."
Boone's athletes were instrumental in OU's tremendous season as Marcus Pugh won the 100-meter dash title and Scottesha Miller became the first freshman ever to win the women's long jump at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
As the relays coach, she guided the men's and women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays to the NCAA Championships - the first time in history all four Sooner relays qualified in the same season.
Boone's athletes earned 10 All-America honors in a single day at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as part of the team's record total of 14, and broke five individual event or relay program records throughout the year.
Boone was named the 2007 Midwest Region Men's Sprints/Hurdles Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She was the lone female coach to earn the honor for work with a men's team.
Boone was hired by OU in 2005 after serving as an assistant at LSU. She has also coached at Texas, Tulane, Middle Tennessee and South Carolina.
Smith also noted that assistant coach Jeremy Fischer will take on new responsibilities among the staff as recruiting coordinator and academic services liaison.
Fischer, who specializes with men's and women's jumps, was named the 2007 Midwest Region Men's Jumps/Combined Events Coach of the Year. No men's or women's team totaled more points in the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the Big 12 Championships than Oklahoma.
