NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma track and field will be represented next week at the 15th Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with two athletes who have ties to the Sooner program competing.
OU junior Jacobi Mitchell and 2005 graduate Aldwyn Sappleton take to the track for their native countries. The meet leads a series of significant upcoming competitions, including the 2007 World Athletics Championships and 2008 Olympic Games.
Mitchell, a native of the Bahamas, will be one of the busiest athletes in Rio as he will run the 100- and 200-meter dashes and a leg on the team's 4x100-meter relay.
Mitchell could potentially run each day next week except for Thursday's official rest day. He first takes to the track Monday, July 23, for the first and semifinal rounds of the 100-meter dash.
Sappleton, who recently won his third Jamaican national title in a personal-record time, competes in the 800-meter run.
The preliminary rounds of the 800-meter run are Friday, July 27, with the final Saturday, July 28.
