Snyder, Team USA Leave for Brazil

June 30, 2007 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma freshman Kevin Snyder joins many of the nation's best young athletes as part of the U.S. team that competes at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, July 6-8, in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Pan Am Championships is the top international meet for juniors in 2007. A junior athlete is one who is under 20 years of age through Dec. 31, 2007.

A total of 70 athletes - 35 men and 35 women - will represent the United States at the Pan Am Championships. The roster was based on performance at last weekend's U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis.

Snyder leaves Oklahoma today to join the rest of Team USA in Miami, Fla., before the group departs for Brazil Sunday morning.

Snyder, an Oklahoma City native, won the men's high jump as the only competitor to clear 6 feet, 11.75 inches (2.13 meters), matching his personal best.

Snyder competes Saturday, July 7, at 3:45 p.m. local . São Paulo is two hours ahead of Central Time.

Team USA will be led at the Pan Am Championships by a large number of record setters and award winners.

Bryshon Nellum (Los Angeles, Calif.) was recently selected as Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. He won the 400-meter dash at the U.S. Junior Championships in a time of 45.38 seconds, a mark that would have placed fifth in the senior division.

2007 Gatorade National Youth Track & Field Athlete of the Year and two-time U.S. junior champion Emily Pendleton (Elmore, Ohio) will compete in the women's discus.

Walter Henning (Kings Park, N.Y.) will represent Team USA at the Pan American Junior Athletic Championships in the hammer throw. Henning established a new American Junior and meet record at the U.S. Championships.

Rynell Parson (San Antonio, Texas) leads a strong sprint crew after winning the 100-meter dash at the Junior Championships in a World Youth best time of 10.23.

Two-time U.S. junior champion and 2007 Nike Outdoor National champion Jessica Beard (Euclid, Ohio) ran 52.12 in the 400-meter dash at the Junior Championships.
