INDIANAPOLIS -- Day three at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships saw the future of the Sooners take on the nation's best competition as three of the team's young stars competed Friday.

OU freshman Jon Grey, who redshirted the indoor and outdoor track seasons, took fifth place in the junior men's 10,000-meter run, his first race ever at the distance.

"I went out just a tiny bit too fast, but there's a lot of room to improve," Grey said. "I tried to make it an honest race, but no one wanted to go with me (at the start).

"With more strength work and things like that hopefully things will get better. Hopefully, I can improve a lot and help this team finish better in the conference in the years to come."

Grey, who finished in 31:31.40, led the first 10 laps before Oregon's Kenny Klotz took over the race.

Klotz won in 30:51.75.

Mustang, Okla., native Kevin Schwab, who will compete for the Sooners beginning this fall finished second to Klotz with a time of 30:56.75.

OU freshman Zach Dawson took 11th in the junior men's 400-meter dash preliminaries, missing the final round by .49 seconds.

Preliminary leader Bryshon Nellum, a freshman at Southern Cal, clocked 46.40.

Marcus Pugh competes in the first round of the men's 200-meter dash at 3:05 p.m. Central Saturday.

If he should make the top 16, he will advance to Sunday's semifinal round to be run at 11 a.m.

The U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships will broadcast live Saturday on NBC at 1 p.m. A tape-delayed broadcast of the action will also air on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. All times Central.
