Sooners End with 14 All-Americans

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams ended the 2007 NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 14 total All-Americans, matching the combined program record set in 1997.

Kevin Bookout (shot put), Jessica Eldridge (1500-meter run) and Toni Smith (women's triple jump) all earned the honor Saturday.

Friday proved to be perhaps the best ever single day of performance by the Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams as nine All-Americans were crowned within the span of a few hours.

Chip Heuser took third in the men's pole vault, the best finish by a Sooner in eight seasons.

The Sooners added eight All-Americans as the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays finish fourth and fifth, respectively. The women's finish was OU's best all-time.

Oklahoma also has two All-Americans in Yolanda Goff (women's 100-meter dash) and Dermillo Wise (men's long jump).

Oklahoma's 14 All-Americans

The largest ever field of Sooners - 14 men and eight women - compete at the NCAA Championships in what has been a record-setting season for both teams under the tutelage of second-year head coach Martin Smith.

The men's team captured its first Big 12 and Midwest Regional titles. The conference title was OU's first in 29 years.

The women's team matched a program best sixth-place finish at the Big 12 outdoor meet after a stellar indoor campaign when they placed fourth at the conference meet and added a school-record six All-Americans at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Television coverage of the NCAA Championships occurs Friday, June 8, and Saturday, June 9. CSTV has three hours of coverage Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Central. CBS broadcasts live from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
