Relays Advance to NCAA Finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Oklahoma track and field teams qualified both their men's and women's 4x100-meter relays to the finals of the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday.

The men's 4x100 of Ronnie Pines, Marcus Pugh, Frankie Wright and Jacobi Mitchell, the ninth-ranked relay entering the meet, ran the fourth fastest time in the preliminaries at 39.84.

The women's 4x100 of Leslie Cole, Yolanda Goff, Scottesha Miller and Larica Urbina was also the fourth fastest in its preliminary round, scoring the win in the third heat at 44.27.

The qualification of both relays all but guarantees Oklahoma eight All-Americans granted both teams finish the final race on Friday.

Pugh and Goff also advanced to the semifinal rounds of the 100-meter dash, but neither made the final event.

Pugh clocked 10.39 in his preliminary heat, becoming the final of 18 qualifiers to advance to the semifinal.  Pugh ran 10.40 in his semifinal heat to earn the 15th overall position.

Goff earned All-America honors, given to the top eight American finishers, after placing 10th overall in the women's 100-meter dash.  Two Jamaicans finished ahead of her in the competition.

Goff ran a wind-aided 11.31 in her preliminary heat, but was the first athlete left out of nine-woman field for the final race after running 10.40 in the semifinal.

Dermillo Wise had the seventh best long jump in the preliminaries of the event to qualify for Friday's final.  Wise had a best jump of 24 feet, 11.75 inches (7.61 meters).

Chip Heuser was one of 16 to qualify for the men's pole vault final scheduled for Friday.  Heuser needed his final attempt to make the necessary clearance of 16-10.75 (5.15).

Scott Martin failed to make a height in the pole vault.

Mitch Henry ended day one of the decathlon in 19th overall with 3,668 points, 102 points out of the top 10.

Tennessee's Jangy Addy, who won the first three events - 100-meter dash, long jump and shot put - was the overall leader at 4,211.

Henry had a season best long jump of 23-8.00 (7.21) to finish fourth in the second event of the morning.

The Inola, Okla., native is historically a better second-day decathlete when five of his better events - 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, javelin throw, pole vault and 1500-meter run - are contended.
