Big 12 Honors Eckermann and Dickson

April 10, 2007 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.  The No. 2 Oklahoma softball team continues to roll in the weekly honors as senior Norrelle Dickson was named Co-Big 12 Player of the Week and junior pitcher Lauren Eckermann was selected as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the games of April 2-8, the league office announced.  Dickson shared the honor with Baylor's Brette Reagan.

It marked the fourth weekly award for Dickson of her career and the third for Eckermann this season.  The Sooners are leading the conference in Pitcher and Player of the Week honors this year.  OU has garnered four player of the week honors this season while Eckermann's three pitching honors lead the league.

Dickson led the Sooners to a 3-0 Big 12 record this past week.  She compiled a .600 batting average and two RBI while extending her hitting streak to 13 games to tie her career high.  The Orange, Calif., native collected the 100th stolen base of her career and also became the first player in Big 12 and OU history to tally at least 300 hits, 200 runs and 100 stolen bases.  Dickson is only the 11th player in NCAA history to accomplish the feat.

Against Oklahoma State, Dickson was 2-for-3 and scored a run en route to an 8-0 run rule of the Cowgirls.  She followed that performance with a 2-for-2 outing in game one versus Iowa State, in which she drew a walk and scored two runs.  Dickson contributed to OU's only runs in the first nine innings of the extra-frames contest.  She had a two RBI single and hit 2-for-5 in the series finale.  Dickson posted a .600 slugging percentage in three games while also recording a .636 on-base clip.

Eckermann, the Big 12 wins leader (25-1), added three more victories to her record with a sweep over Iowa State and a run-rule victory versus Oklahoma State.  She recorded a 0.00 ERA in 14.2 innings, including two shutouts.  The Brenham, Texas junior held opponents to a .146 batting average last week while throwing 24 strikeouts in two starts and one relief appearance.

Eckermann opened the week with a shutout of OSU, allowing three hits and recording 10 strikeouts in the five-inning game.  In game one against ISU, Eckermann tallied her 10th shutout of the season.  She entered the second contest when it was tied 2-2 and pitched the final 4.2 of the 10-inning victory, holding ISU to one hit while striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced.

Eckermann and the Sooners will hit the road this week for a pair of games.  OU will head to Denton, Texas on Wednesday to take on North Texas at 6 p.m.  Oklahoma returns to Big 12 play for a crucial series against Missouri this weekend.  The Sooners and Tigers will begin the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday and play the finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
