SOUTH BEND, Ind. The University of Oklahoma men's and women's distance medley relays smashed school records at the Alex Wilson Invitational Friday night.

Attempting to qualify for next weekend's NCAA National Indoor Championships at a last chance meet hosted by Notre Dame, the women's relay of Catherine Odell, Tijahnni Newton, Kristi Cook and Jessica Eldridge finished second in a combined 11 minutes, 13.94 seconds.

The distance medley is a 4,000-meter relay with legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters.

The quartet broke the record set by the same group last season at 11:14.63 en route to taking runner-up honors to the University of Arkansas (11:13.17).  The time recorded by Oklahoma is the seventh fastest run in the nation to date.  The NCAA fields a minimum of 10 relays in the event, so the Sooner women appear to be a lock to make the field for the March 9 race in Fayetteville, Ark.

Results: Notre Dame

The men's team of Logan Jones, Frankie Wright, Brayon Brown and Rob Sorrell also took down their own record set earlier this season with a run of 9:42.88.  At 16th overall tonight, however, the relay must await the decision of the NCAA selection committee to determine the field size for the national championships.

Pole Vaulters Rebound in Fayetteville
Though All-Americans Chip Heuser and Scott Martin did not improve on their season bests, the duo did rebound at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet after disappointing performances at the Big 12 Championships.

Heuser was first overall and Martin was third (matched second place in height but was placed third on number of attempts) at the site of the NCAA Championships with clearances of 17 feet, 6.25 inches (5.34 meters) and 17-2.25 (5.24), respectively.

Big 12 indoor champion Jordan Scott of Kansas managed fourth at 16-8.25 (5.09).

Last Chance Saturday
Several Sooners continue competition at the Alex Wilson Invitational Saturday, March 3, as athletes attempt to improve their position on the NCAA performance list at meets across the nation.

Sooners in action Saturday include Yolanda Goff, Tydree Lewis, Jacob Boone and the OU men's and women's 4x400-meter relays.
