Records Fall at Sooner Open

Smith Becomes All-American

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  University of Oklahoma triple jumper Toni Smith placed fourth Saturday night at the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships, earning the first All-America honor of her career.

Smith, the school record holder in the event, jumped 42 feet, 11.50 inches (13.09 meters), the best ever by a Sooner woman at the NCAA Championships.  Smith is the first Sooner woman to become an All-American in the triple jump during either the indoor or outdoor season. She was the sixth Sooner to earn All-America honors during the Championships.

Stanford's Erica McClain won the women's triple jump after leaping 45-7.75 (13.91) on her first attempt.

Kevin Bookout finished 11th overall in the men's shot put with a best of 59-9.00 (18.21).  USC's Noah Bryant took top honors at 67-5.25 (20.55).

Shardae Boutte was 11th in the men's triple jump at 49-7.00 (15.11).  It was Boutte's first competition since suffering a broken nose and concussion at the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 24.

The NCAA Championships will broadcast on ESPN2 Tuesday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. Central.
