STUGGART, Germany Olympian and former University of Oklahoma sprinter Laverne Jones set the world leading mark in two events at the Sparkassen Cup Saturday, Feb. 3.

Jones won the women's 60-meter dash in 7.16 seconds and 400-meter dash in 51.60.

Jones' 60-meter run did not look promising after coming out of the blocks fifth, but she made up the ground by the 40-meter mark and overtook runner-up Sina Schielke of Germany steps before the finish line.

Sparkassen Cup Results

The U.S. Virgin Islands native returned to the track to break her own world-leading mark in the 400, taking the race by nearly one second over Germany's Claudia Hoffman (52.57).

The Sparkassen Cup proved to be fast in more than just sprints as Ethiopian Mesert Defar broke her own world record in the women's indoor 3,000-meter run with a run of 8:23.72 just one week after doing the same last week in Boston.

The former Sooner, Jones, was a six-time NCAA All-American and the first woman from the university to compete in the Olympics.
