Mathis Throws No-Hitter in Run Rule

NORMAN, Okla. Sophomore lefty D.J. Mathis pitched the first no-hitter since 2003 and the Oklahoma offense combined for 14 runs on 11 hits as the Sooners run ruled Arkansas, 14-0, in game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. The last Sooner to pitch a no-hitter for the Sooners was Kami Keiter on April 22, 2003 against Tulsa.
Samantha Ricketts led the Sooners at the plate with five RBI on a 2-for-3 performance that included her sixth home run of the year, a team best. Senior Amber Spaulding also contributed three RBI with her 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Savannah Long added her first home run of the season and Lindsey Vandever and Jessica Legendre connected on doubles for the Sooners.
The run rule marked OU's eighth of the season as the Sooners are leading the nation in runs scored with an average of 8.5 runs per game.

Spaulding sparked the offense in the bottom of the second as she pounded a bases-loaded two RBI single to center field to give Oklahoma the initial 2-0 lead with two outs. Amber Flores followed with an RBI single to left field to add another run as OU led 3-0 after two frames.
Long opened it up in the bottom of the third with her two-run homer over the left center field fence to extend the Sooner lead to 5-0. It marked the shortstop's first home run of the year. The Sooners have hit a home run in 14 of their last 15 contests.
The Sooners kept it going in the bottom of the third as they strung together four straight hits with Spaulding adding two RBI on her single and OU led 7-0. However, Oklahoma added more runs as Ricketts followed with her two RBI single and Mariee Mena, the National Player of the Week, added an RBI single to right field as OU gained the 10-0 lead. Stacia Aleman's ground-out RBI scored the final run of the inning as OU finished the bottom of the third leading 11-0.
Ricketts kept the offense going in the bottom of the fourth as she pounded her sixth home run of the year, a deep three-run shot past right center field as OU took the 14-0 advantage.
Oklahoma began game two of the twin bill against Arkansas at 5 p.m.
