Baseball Begins Fall Practice

NORMAN, Okla. - After a month of individual workouts, the Oklahoma baseball team began team practices for the fall on Thursday, Oct. 4.
Entering his third year at the helm, OU head coach Sunny Golloway returns 19 letterwinners for the 2008 season after narrowily missing the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The 2007 Sooners finished the year with a 34-24 overall record and placed seventh in the Big 12 regular season standings with an 11-16 mark.
Oklahoma finished the 2007 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with a 2-1 record and was one hit away from advancing to its first title game appearance since 1997.
The Sooners failed to make their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament despite a stong showing in the Big 12 Championship with wins over then-No. 11 Missouri and then-No. 21 Oklahoma State and a top 30 RPI.

The first intrasquad scrimmage, which is open to the public, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
The annual Red-White Series will conclude team practices and will be held during the last week of the fall season. Dates and times for the three-game series, along with other intrasquad scrimmages, will be announced at a later time on SoonerSports.com.
Included in the group of 19 letterwinners returning for 2008, OU returns seven position players that started 10 or more games in the field a season ago, including senior infielder/outfielder Aljay Davis and sophomore first baseman Aaron Baker. Both Baker and Davis started over 50 games last season and hit over .300 at the plate.
On the mound, OU returns its Friday night starter Stephen Porlier. The junior led the Big 12 during the regular season in strikeouts and finished his first year in Norman with a 7-5 record. Senior Ryan Mottern also brings experience to the staff with 22 starts in his career.
In the bullpen, junior Nick Conaway and sophomores Andrew Doyle and Garrett Richards all logged significant innings last season and combined for five wins and 12 saves.
In addition to the 18 newcomers that joined the Sooners in August, OU also added assistant coach Mike Bell to its staff.
Bell, who takes over as the Sooners' pitching coach, comes to Norman after spending the last three seasons at the University of Tennessee, where he helped lead the Vols to the College World Series in 2005.
