Women's Tennis Completes Opener

NORMAN Okla.- The women's tennis team completed its fall season opener Sunday in Waco, Texas.

After losing in the quarterfinals, Rachel Cox and Brittany Baldy worked their way through the consolation bracket of the white doubles draw.  They advanced to the finals by defeating Dina Pavlin and Lana Pavlin (ACU) 8-6.  They then claimed the consolation title by defeating Rebecca Lin and Emily Braid of Rice 8-6. 

OU's Anne Carter and Chelsea Orr lost in the semifinals of the gold consolation bracket.  They were defeated by Irina Sotrikova and Lata Assudani (SHSU) 8-4. 

Monica Purice and Christi Baxley advanced to the semifinals of the green draw by defeating Kimberley Patenaude and Tiffany Lee (Rice) 8-4.  They then came up short and were defeated by Kerryn Potgieter and Samantha Van der Drift of Texas Tech 8-5. 

In singles play the Sonners played hard, but all came up short before advancing to the finals. 

OU's Baldy fought hard in the semifinals of the white draw, but was defeated by No. 1 seeded Monica Neveklovska (SMU) 6-3, 6-2. 

OU's Purice played well through the gold bracket but was also beat out in the semifinals.  Purice was defeated by Baylor's Zuzana Cerna 7-6, 6-0.   

In the consolation bracket of the white draw Cox was also beat in the semifinals by Jo-Ann Van Arede (Louisville) 6-3, 6-2. 

OU's Gabby Baker will open her fall season September 30th in Los Angeles Calif. when she competes in the All-American Pre-Qualifying tournament. 

The team will be back in action as a whole October 18th at the ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa Okla.
