NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma track & field and cross country head coach Martin Smith announced the hiring of Tom McArdle as assistant track & field and cross country coach Wednesday.

McArdle, 24, joins the Sooners' staff after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Texas men's program last season.  At OU, McArdle will coach men's and women's distance events.

“Tom is an outstanding person and athlete, “Smith said, “and will help us build the cross country and track & field programs we intend to have at Oklahoma.  He brings tremendous knowledge and relationship-building characteristics that will be invaluable to our student-athletes.”

“I'm honored to join an athletics department as prestigious as Oklahoma's,” McArdle said. “I have quite an admiration for Martin Smith and his staff and what they have accomplished.  I understand this is a great opportunity and I'm looking forward to the season.”

A native of Brookline, Mass., McArdle was a six-time All-America distance runner at Dartmouth College.  In 2002, he ran the fastest time in the nation by a collegian in the 10,000-meter run and placed third in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

As a senior, he placed eighth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

His junior season also produced a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships and a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

During his sophomore campaign, McArdle placed fifth in the 10,000 at the NCAA Outdoor and 10th in the 5,000 at the NCAA Indoor.

Upon his graduation, he signed a two-year endorsement deal with Nike.

McArdle earned his bachelor's degree in history at Dartmouth and has finished coursework towards a sports management master's degree from Texas.
