METAIRIE, La. Three University of Oklahoma athletes were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's All-Academic Track & Field Team by the national office Wednesday.
Ashley Harris, Catherine Odell and Kristi Cook were all honored by the organization for their outstanding accomplishments on and off the track during the 2006 season.
Oklahoma was one of only five Big 12 universities to place a member on the women's academic team. Nebraska led the league with nine members, Kansas State and Oklahoma State tied OU with three each, and Texas Tech had one.
Stanford had the most individual women on the All-Academic Team with 10.
The USTFCCCA honors individuals and teams for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, an athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and must have met the NCAA Division I regional or national qualifying standard in her event. Student-athletes in their initial year of competition are not eligible.
Harris, a letters junior, achieved personal bests in the indoor 60- and 200-meter dashes and outdoor 100 and 200 and helped the women's 4x100-meter relay qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Cook, a marketing sophomore, and Odell, a language arts junior, starred on the team's distance medley relay during the indoor season. Their efforts helped the relay win the Big 12 title and set the school record in the event.
The USTFCCCA men's all-academic team will be announced later this week.
