Pole Vaulters Fall Short in Finals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- University of Oklahoma pole vaulters Chip Heuser and Scott Martin finished 10th and 11th, respectively, at the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday afternoon.
Heuser cleared the opening height of 16 feet, 8.75 inches (5.10 meters) and 17-2.75 (5.25) on his first attempts, but struggled at 17-6.50 (5.35). His second attempt looked good enough to pass the bar, but a slight graze on the descent caused it to fall from its supports as Heuser landed on the mat.
The Louisville, Ky., native earned All-America honors by finishing among the top eight Americans.
Martin missed his first attempt at the opening height and cleared it by eight inches on his second.

As expected, Oregon's Tommy Skipper cruised to victory. Skipper cleared 18-8.25 (5.70) on his first attempt at the height to win by 7.25 inches.
Kevin Bookout is the final Sooner remaining at the Championships. The two-time All-American competes in the shot put finals Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
The NCAA Championships will be broadcast live on CBS beginning at 2:30, just in time to cover Bookout's performances.
