INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Oklahoma sophomore Katherine Johnson placed third in the women's high jump at the USA Junior National Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday.
Johnson cleared five feet, eight inches (1.76 meters), earning a bronze medal and becoming the first alternate for the United States' team that will compete at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, in August.
Durham, N.C., native Patience Coleman won the event, posting a best mark of 5-11.25 (1.81).
"It's a little disappointing," OU jumps coach Jeremy Fischer said, "because she was over the bar twice at 5-9 1/4 and it just fell over.
"She jumped very well today and I'm proud she has a chance to represent the U.S. on the world team."

Johnson cleared 5-8.00 (1.73) on her first attempt and 5-9.25 (1.76) would have been a personal best. Though she matched the height of the second-place finisher, UCLA's Lauren Correa, Johnson was awarded third because she needed two attempts to clear the previous height of 5-7.00 (1.70).
"We had a decent week," Fischer continued. "You always want to do better, but to have two student-athletes medal at the junior national championships speaks highly of our program and our future at Oklahoma."
Sooner Amy Backel (pronounced BAKE-uhl) placed fourth in the women's javelin and ninth in the heptathlon Thursday.
The USA Junior Championships conclude June 25 at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis. It is the selection meet for the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China. They are being held in conjunction with the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
