INDIANAPOLIS University of Oklahoma sophomore Amy Backel placed fourth in the javelin throw and ninth overall with 4,583 points in the women's heptathlon at the USA Junior National Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday.
In the open javelin, Backel threw a personal best of 149-4 (45.51). The result earned a spot on the podium and the possibility of representing the United States at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, in August.

Backel also jumped seven spots in the heptathlon standings on day two after scoring 2,712 points in four events Wednesday.
Shana Woods of Long Beach, Calif., won the seven-event series with a point total of 5,533.
Backel followed a shot put victory Wednesday's heptathlon events with another throws win a javelin toss of 136 feet, seven inches (41.64 meters) today to glide into the top 10 of the standings.
She and Woods, who won the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash, were the only athletes to capture multiple event wins in the heptathlon.
The extra javelin session may have cost the Dillsburg, Pa., native a better result in the heptathlon long jump as she had to pass on the round of first attempts and fouled on her second. Her only successful attempt netted a 16-1.00 (4.90) mark for 18th place.
An extended delay for a thunderstorm provided a well-rested field for the final 800-meter run in which Backel placed 16th overall after clocking in at 2:34.33.
OU alumn DaBryan Blanton was run in the preliminary rounds of the men's 100-meter dash for the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships Thursday night, but thunderstorms postponed the evening session until Friday morning. The men's 100-meter dash first round will begin at 10:45 a.m. with the semifinals run at 5:30 p.m.
Sooner sophomore-to-be Katherine Johnson begins competition in the women's high jump Friday at 3:30 p.m. She enters the meet ranked fifth in the junior division.
The 2006 USA Junior Championships take place June 21-25 at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis. The meet runs concurrently with the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships as the selection meet for the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China.
