Track Sends Record Number to Regional

NORMAN, Okla. -- A successful first season under head coach Martin Smith is nearing its conclusion this weekend with the NCAA Midwest Regional Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas in Austin.
The Midwest Regional begins Friday, May 26, and concludes Saturday, May 27. A University of Oklahoma track & field record 29 men's and women's entries will compete at the meet.
Oklahoma is coming off a tremendous performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Waco, Texas, where the Sooner men placed fifth, five points out of third, and the women, who finished dead last a year ago, were 10th without Jessica Eldridge, Catherine Odell and Toni Smith, who combined for 24 points during the indoor season.
The 2006 Sooners crowned conference champions in the women's 1,500-meter run (Eldridge), women's distance medley relay, men's javelin (Cale Drumright) and men's pole vault (Scott Martin). Sophomore pole vaulter Chip Heuser added his named to OU's long list of All-Americans with a fifth-place result at the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships.

SOONERS RANKED HIGHLY
Several Sooners enter the Midwest Regional ranked at or near the top of the field. To guarantee a spot in the national championships, individuals must finish in the top five while relays must finish in the top three.
Junior Cale Drumright is ranked No. 1 in the Midwest in the javelin throw. Drumright won the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago with a personal best throw of 228 feet, 6 inches (69.64 meters).
OU's pole vaulters are tied at No. 2. Big 12 Champion Scott Martin and runner-up Chip Heuser stand behind only Ray Scotten of Nebraska, who they beat at the conference meet.
Marcus Pugh is ranked No. 5 in the men's 100-meter dash while Yolanda Goff is No. 6 in the women's 100.
Kevin Bookout is sixth in the shot put.
Jason Stanley is ranked fifth in the men's 110-meter high hurdles with Dermillo Wise shortly behind at No. 7. Wise also holds the No. 8 ranking in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
Tydree Lewis is ranked seventh in the men's triple jump.
SMITH'S SOONERS BREAK OUTDOOR RECORDS
It didn't take long for the Sooners to start showing success under first-year head coach Martin Smith during the indoor season, and they needed just one meet to continue the trend outdoors.
Four Sooners -- Chip Heuser (pole vault), Scott Martin (pole vault), Tijhanni Newton (women's 400-meter dash) and Dermillo Wise (110-meter hurdles) -- bested the regional qualifying standard at the Tulsa Invitational, an OU best for an opening weekend since the inception of the regional qualifier in 2003.
Prior to 2003, provisional national qualifiers were determined. Four Sooners met provisional marks in its opening weekend of 2002.
OU broke another record regarding regional entries, adding its 26th at the John Jacobs Invitational (April 15). The previous best was 24 in 2003.
At the conclusion of the season, OU had a school-record 30 combined men's (17) and women's (13) entries eligible for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Yolanda Goff was scratched from the declaration list in the 200-meter dash in order to rest her for the 4x100-meter relay, bringing the total number of entries to 29.

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS REVISITED
In what should have been a down year for the Sooners, the men's and women's teams overachieved Sunday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Cale Drumright and Scott Martin won individual event titles as the men's team finished fifth, its best result since 1998, with 74 points, five behind third place. It was also the first time since 1998 that the OU men had two individual event champions.
The women's team, without Big 12 indoor mile champion Jessica Eldridge and points scorers Catherine Odell and Toni Smith, tied for 10th.
Both standings were a dramatic improvement over last year when the men's team placed 10th and the women were dead last.
Drumright dominated the men's javelin throw, winning with a personal best of 228 feet, 6 inches (69.64 meters) and besting second-place Jamie Robinson of Texas Tech by nearly nine feet.
The Ottawa, Kan., native became just the third Sooner to win a conference championship in the javelin and first since Nathan Anderson at the 1936 Big Six Championships.
Martin battled teammate and fellow All-American Chip Heuser in the men's pole vault. Martin scored the victory as the only athlete to clear 17-5.50 (5.32). Heuser was second at 17-0.75 (5.20).
Jason Stanley and Dermillo Wise grabbed second and third, respectively, in the 110-meter high hurdles. Stanley's 13.79-second run was a personal record and the best run by a Sooner in over a decade.
Tony Francis added to the team score with an eighth-place run.
Wise also took sixth (51.93) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
Yolanda Goff finished third in the women's 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.50. Leslie Cole was seventh in 11.69.
Cole placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, sprinting the distance in 24.02.
Marcus Pugh earned fourth (10.47) in the men's 100-meter dash and fifth in the 200 (21.13
Kevin Bookout placed third in the shot put, throwing a season best 61-3.00 (18.67).
Tydree Lewis was third in the triple jump with a bound of 50-5.25 (15.37).
Freshman high jumper Katherine Johnson leaped to a fourth-place result, clearing 5-8.75 (1.75).
Freshman Amy Backel, who placed sixth in the heptathlon Saturday, added to the women's total with a seventh-place result in the javelin throw. Backel threw a personal best 147-05 (44.93), fifth-best all-time by a Sooner.
