NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma freshman Amy Backel opened up the Sooners' participation in the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, finishing 19th in the heptathlon Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Backel scored a personal best 4,685 points in her first collegiate heptathlon, improving on her previous record by 256.
Washington State's Julie Pickler won the combined event with 5,734 points, topping exhibition competitor Ryanne Dupree (5,606).

Backel's best event was the shot put. The true freshman from Dillsburg, Pa., threw a best of 40 feet, 2.75 inches (12.26 meters) to take fourth place.
She also ran a personal best of 15.91 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
The majority of collegiate events begins Friday. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events begin at 12:30 p.m.
