Youth Serves Notice at Texas Relays

NORMAN, Okla. Youth served for Sooner track and field today at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas in Austin under a blazing sun and near 90-degree temperatures.

Sophomore Marcus Pugh advanced to the men's 100-meter dash finals with his fifth-place run in Friday's preliminary rounds. The Tulsa native won his heat handily over TCU's Justyn Warner, clocking in at 10.45, a personal best, in his first competitive run of the season.

Pugh's time in the 100 surpassed the NCAA regional qualifying standard as OU added three entries for the meet which takes place at the same track Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27.

Among Pugh's competition in the 100 finals will be LSU's Kelly Willie, a 2004 Olympic gold medalist (4x100-meter relay) and the No. 2 ranked collegian, and Northwestern (La.) State's Ravyn Hayward, the No. 3 ranked collegian.

Friday Results: Texas Relays | Duke Invitational

Sophomore Tydree Lewis scored a third-place result in the men's triple jump (section A) with a best of 50 feet, 10.00 inches (15.49 meters). The mark qualified Lewis for the regional championships.

Freshman Katherine Johnson placed fourth in the women's high jump (section B) finals. The Michigan native cleared a collegiate best and regional qualifying mark of 5-8.75 inches (1.75).

Johnson matched the height of the second- and third-place jumpers but deferred on number of attempts.
California's Inika McPherson won the event title with a jump of 5-10.00 (1.78).

Oklahoma's men's 4x100-meter relay qualified for Saturday's finals with an eighth-place run, posting a season best 39.95.

OU's women's 4x100-meter relay shaved over a second off of its season best with a 10th-place run of 40.45 seconds, besting the regional qualifying mark for the first time this season.

The women's 4x400-meter relay also timed in a season best run of 3:46.65, but failed to make it out of the preliminaries.
Junior Portia Nash qualified for the NCAA regional with a ninth-place result in the women's triple jump (section B). Nash tallied a best leap of 40-9.00 (12.42).

Nash also placed sixth in the women's long jump (section B), leaping 19-6.75 (5.96).

Aja Clark was the first of three OU distance runners to compete at the Duke Invitational this weekend in Durham, N.C. Clark finished 18th of 50 competitors in the women's 5,000-meter run, completing the distance in 17:43.63.
