Track & Field Shines in Prime Time

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams shined under the lights at the Rice Twilight Saturday night, winning a combined 12 events at the meet in Houston, Texas.

Though headwinds slowed most of the events, the Sooners placed individuals on the top step of the podium in six men's events and six women's events.

The Sooner women sprint corps dominated the primetime affair as junior Yolanda Goff swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes, running 11.77 and 23.98, respectively.

Tijahnni Newton grabbed first in the 400-meter dash at 55.00 and Nicola Maye won the 800-meter run at 2:12.77.

OU's women also swept the sprint relays, winning the 4x100 in 45.65 and 4x400 in a season best 3:44.25.

The men's sprinters weren't as lucky, facing a stiffer wind and stronger field.

In the 100-meter dash, Marcus Pugh (10.75) placed second to Western Illinois alum and Olympic hopeful Desmond Bynum (10.74) in the closest race of the evening.

Ronnie Pines was third (11.88) and Josh Scott finished fifth (11.08).

Jason Stanley won 110-meter high hurdles, clocking in at 14.16. Dermillo Wise (14.37) placed third and Tony Francis (14.60) was fifth.

Wise returned to place third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a personal best time of 52.38.

Running in a combined 3:12.55, the OU men's team also won the 4x400-meter relay.

The field proved no competition for OU's All-American pole vault duo of Scott Martin and Chip Heuser.

Martin and Heuser vaulted 17 feet, 4.50 inches (5.30 meters), but Martin was awarded first prize for clearing the height on his first attempt. Heuser made it on his second.

All-American Kevin Bookout shot put a season best 60-2.00 (18.34) to win that event. Bookout also placed fifth in the discus throw with a best of 165-1 (50.32).

Tydree Lewis bested 50-7.25 (15.42) to win the men's triple jump.

Cale Drumright rode a wave of confidence all the way to Houston, recording a personal best in the javelin throw for the second consecutive week.

Drumright tossed the implement 214-4 (65.34) in victory. The mark, which is over 10 feet further than his previous best, ranks sixth on OU's all-time performance list.

Frankie Wright placed third in the long jump with a season best leap of 23-4.50 (7.12). Wright also placed fourth in his first 200-meter dash of the season with an impressive run of 21.51.

Brayon Brown, Kristi Cook and Blake Culp will compete for the Sooners Sunday at the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. Live results are available, courtesy of recordtiming.com.
