Track Hits First Leg of Texas Two-Step

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams doubled up in the Lone Star State Saturday, scoring impressive victories at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth and the Texas Twilight in Austin.

At Texas Christian, OU's All-American pole vaulting duo of Scott Martin and Chip Heuser put on a show, indicating what is to come at the Big 12 Championships in three weeks.

Martin claimed first prize, clearing a season best 17 feet, 8.50 inches (5.40 meters), over Texas Tech's Sage Thomas on number of attempts.

Heuser placed third, bowing out after clearing 17-4.50 (5.30).

OU alum DaBryan Blanton cruised to victory in the men's 100-meter dash, defeating Jamaica's Ricardo Williams by .11 seconds.  Blanton's 10.14 sprint was the seventh fastest time run in the world this year and second fastest run by an American.

Marcus Pugh ran sixth (10.40) in the race.  Ronnie Pines (10.50) and Josh Scott (10.57) finished 10th and 12th, respectively.

Pugh scored the top-collegian finish in the 200-meter dash, fifth overall, with a collegiate best run of 21.06.  Scott ran sixth with a personal best of 21.16, earning a spot at the NCAA regional on May 26.  Blanton was second (20.75).

Cale Drumright won the men's javelin competition in spectacular fashion.  Drumright surpassed his personal best by over 10 feet with a throw of 203-11 (62.15), besting the regional qualifying mark in the event for the first time in his career.

Chase Bridgforth placed sixth with a best of 165-10 (50.56).

All-American Kevin Bookout finished runner-up in the shot put, throwing 59-3.50 (18.07), and fourth in discus throw, with a best of 168-3 (51.29).

Yolanda Goff was runner-up in the women's 100-meter dash.  Goff's 11.49 run was a season best and ranks fifth on OU's all-time performance list.

Larica Urbina finished fifth in the 100 at 11.78.

OU's men won the 4x100-meter relay, clocking in at 40.09, and the OU women placed second in their 4x100 behind home squad TCU, finishing in 45.44.

Dermillo Wise and Jason Stanley placed third and fifth, respectively, in the men's 110-meter hurdles.  Both ran under the regional qualifying standard as Wise finished in 13.99 and Stanley in 14.07.

Tijahnni Newton ran the women's 400-meter dash in 55.56 for fourth overall.  Terrika Warren was ninth at 58.14.

Nicola Maye covered the women's 800-meter run in a season best 2:11.96 to finish fourth.

Portia Nash claimed fourth place in the women's long jump, counting her best jump of 19-6.25 (5.95).

Shea Shelby claimed third place in the men's high jump, clearing 6-4.75 (1.95).

Katherine Johnson placed fifth in the women's high jump, clearing 5-7.00 (1.70). 

Teammate Myria Houlihan finished right behind her in sixth with a season best of 5-3.00 (1.60).

Tydree Lewis triple jumped 49-7.75 (15.13) to earn fourth in the men's event.

Leslie Cole raced to fifth place in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.99.

Lucretia Rimmer was sixth in the women's triple jump at 37-6.00 (11.43).

Further south in Austin, Sooners were tearing up the University of Texas' track for the second time in three weeks.

Two-time Olympian and OU alum Michael Blackwood was victorious in the men's 400-meter dash.  Blackwood posted a season best run of 45.77 to beat fellow Jamaican Marvin Essor (46.28).

Blackwood's 400 was the 29th fastest in the world this year and fourth best by a Jamaican.

OU's Jessica Eldridge, running unattached, pulled out a nine-second margin of victory in the women's 1,500-meter run over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi runner Meghan Lemke.  OU's Aja Clark finished third in a personal best 4:46.60.

Eldridge (2:11.51) also finished sixth in the women's 800-meter run just in front of OU's Kristi Cook (2:14.05).

Jason Penland missed a personal best in the men's 1,500 by less than one-tenth of a second, finishing fifth in 3:59.72.

Blake Culp (6:04.78) finished sixth behind a quintet of Longhorns in the seldom-run 2,000-meter steeplechase.

In the men's 800-meter run, OU alum Aldwyn Sappleton (1:53.30) and Jason Coleman (1:53.98), running unattached, placed fourth and fifth.
