Women's Golf Finishes in 10th Place
April 19, 2006 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's golf team finished the Big 12 Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. Wednesday in 10th place with a third-round 322 (+34) and a final score of 940 (+76).
Texas A&M took home Big 12 Championship honors after trailing Oklahoma State during the first two rounds of the tournament. The Sooners finished 41 strokes behind the Aggies.
“Today was a rough day,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “I thought we were going to pick up a lot of shots and then we lost about seven or eight shots coming in. It was just windy, which is difficult.”
True freshman Kendall Dye and sophomore Kelly Jacques added top-20 finishes to their resumes this week. Both golfers tied for 19th place with totals of 233 (+17). Dye, who led the team all three days, registered an 80 (+8) in the third round. This marks Dye's second career top-20 finish. Jacques posted a third-round 77 (+5) making this her fifth top-20 finish of the season and seventh of her career.
“I'm really proud of Kelly for finishing strong and Kendall played really well too,” said Ludvigson.
Sophomore Heather Wright tied for 26th place with a final 235 (+19) after shooting an 81 (+9) on the last day. With a three-day total of 242 (+26), junior Jaclyn Stelzer tied for 46th place after carding an 85 (+13) in the last round. Lone senior Amparo Gala tied for 48th with a 243 (+27) after producing an 84 (+12).
“The positive is that it shows how strong our Big 12 is,” said Ludvigson. “We've got a lot of teams that are pretty much equal to each other. Now we just have to wait and see, head-to-head, if we get into the regional tournament.”
The NCAA Selection Committee will announce the regional fields the first week of May. If selected, the Sooners will compete in the NCAA Central Regional May 11-13 in College Station, Texas.
