NORMAN, Okla. Oklahoma's Amy Backel placed second in the women's pentathlon Friday, Feb. 3, at the sixth annual J.D. Martin Invitational.
Deidra Wesley of North Texas won the event for the second straight year, scoring 3,668 points. Backel scored 3,356. SaVita Spellmon (unattached) placed third with 2,944.
Wesley won the 60-meter hurdles (9.16), high jump (5-8.75) and 800-meter run (2:33.69). Backel was victorius in the shot put (44-1.5) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Joviann Thompson in the long jump (17-6.75).

Backel's shot put throw of 44-1.5 (13.45m) ranked ninth on OU's all-time indoor performance list. Her total points score ranked eighth.
The J.D. Martin Invitational continues Saturday beginning with the women's weight throw at 10 a.m. Running events begin at 12:30 p.m.
The men's heptathlon events scheduled for Friday and Saturday were cancelled.
