World's Fastest Highlight Sooner Indoor

NORMAN, Okla. Forget about the icy weather outside. The 32nd annual Sooner Indoor will be blazing hot Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Mosier Indoor Track on the University of Oklahoma campus.

Five of the fastest men on the planet are in the field for the men's 60-meter dash, according to the entry list released Thursday afternoon.

DaBryan Blanton, Ronnie Pines, Marcus Pugh, Ricardo Williams and Shomari Wilson all have a legitimate chance to run the fastest time in the world this year when they step on the track.

Blanton, a former two-time NCAA National Champion in the 60 meters, has a season best of 6.64 seconds run in Houston on Feb. 11. His personal best, and OU's school record, is 6.57 run at the 2004 Big 12 Championships. His mark ranks 36th in the world this year.

Pines owns of the nation's fastest collegiate time of 6.60, set Feb. 4 at the Mosier Indoor during the finals of the J.D. Martin Invitational. The mark also broke meet and facility records, respectively held by Pines (2005) and Blanton (2004), respectively.

Pines is the youngest athlete to run 6.60 or better this year. In 2006, he is ranked seventh among Americans and 13th in the world.

Pugh set a personal best of 6.69 when he finished third to Pines and Wilson during the J.D. Martin Invitational finals. His mark ranks 16th in the NCAA and 82nd in the world.

Williams, a Texas Christian University alum, has competed at the Olympics Games and World Indoor Championships for his native Jamaica. Williams' personal best of 6.68 was set during the prelims at the J.D. Martin Invitational. He followed that with a 6.70 in the finals.

Wilson, a four-year letterwinner at OU from 1996-99 and school-record holder in the indoor 200-meter dash, finished second to Pines during his record-breaking run with a 6.66 effort, 48th best in the world.

Great Britain's Jason Gardener owns the world's fastest time in the 60 this year at 6.55 seconds.

The men's race won't steal all the thunder as two of the fastest women in the world also compete this weekend.

Oklahoma's Yolanda Goff and Jamaica's Sheri-Ann Brooks, with the 66th and 81st fastest runs in the world this year, respectively, will be the favorites to take the women's 60-meter dash title.

Also amongst the competitors will be two-time Olympian Michael Blackwood, running the 400-meter dash.

The men's 60-meter dash preliminary heats are tentatively scheduled to begin at 1:20 p.m. with the finals beginning at 2:10 p.m.

Admission to the Sooner Indoor is free.
