Track Signs Five to End Early Period

Track & Field Starts Student Development Program

September 13, 2005 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla.   Are you interested in learning proper walking/running techniques or looking for a safe place to exercise under professional guidance? Do you need extra motivation to exercise consistently or want running partners who won't back out of a workout?

The University of Oklahoma track and field department, under the direction of first-year head coach Martin Smith, is installing a new program for OU's female undergraduate students.

“This program would be similar to a running club,” Smith said, “but with better instruction and resources than you would probably find at any club, and all conveniently located on campus in Norman.”

The program, for women serious about their fitness, would involve the same training that OU's track athletes receive in a less intense format. Students would also have the full use of the track and field facilities.

“Those who joined would be treated like Division I collegiate athletes, just without the competitions,” Smith said. “Although, if someone was looking to try out for the track team and wanted to know what it takes, this would be the place to start.”

Schedule details have not been finalized, but plans are for training sessions three mornings each week with a personalized workout routine.

Leading the program will be new volunteer assistant coach Brett Holts. A former standout distance runner for Smith at the University of Oregon, Holts was a two-time All-American and team captain of his cross country and track and field teams.

“I've noticed many students running around campus,” Holts said. “So, for some, it's obviously a very important part of their daily routine.  Our goal is to help shape their workouts and get the value out of running they have yet to experience.”

A meeting for those interested will be held Monday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.

Students who have further questions or wish to participate but may be unable to attend should call track and field director of operations Skip Pickens at 325-8205.
