June 08, 2005 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. -- A pair of Sooner men, Aldwyn Sappleton and Jason Coleman, have been named to the first team of the CoSIDA Academic All-America team for District VI. Jackie Dubois, a member of the Sooner women's team, was named to the women's second team.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America program is the oldest in the country and is sponsored by ESPN, The Magazine. The honorees are nominated by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America and must have a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and by a key member of the team. District teams are voted on by CoSIDA members within the district, then district nominees are advanced to a national ballot which is voted on by the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee.

This marks the first time in his five-year Sooner career for Sappleton to earn first-team honors. He was a second team all-district honoree in 2003. It marks the first time for Coleman and Dubois to be named to the all-district squad.

Sappleton, who is from Clarendon, Jamaica, finished his undergraduate degree in international business with a minor in economics in May 2004, then began work on his master's of business administration while completing his athletic career. He finished his undergraduate degree with a 3.55 GPA and has a 3.33 GPA in graduate work. He was named a 2005 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award winner in April and ended his competitive career for OU at the NCAA Midwest Regionals two weeks ago. In 2004-2005, he served OU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as vice president for communication and he received the 2005 OU Athletics Council Service Award in April.

Coleman, a sophomore from Watonga, has a 3.79 GPA in architecture. He was named to the 2004 All-Big 12 academic first team in cross country and the 2005 All-Big 12 academic first team in track and field, both in his first year of eligibility for those honors. He is a four-time selection for the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a two-time All-Big 12 honoree in track and field. He led the Sooner cross country team last fall and has been a key member of the men's indoor distance medley, outdoor 3200-meter and outdoor distance medley relay teams. The indoor DMR finished second at the 2005 Big 12 Indoor, the outdoor 3200-meter set a school record at the 2005 Texas Relays and the outdoor DMR finished fifth at the Texas Relays with the ninth best time in school history. He also has been key in the Sooner men earning All-Academic team with distinction honors in 2003 and 2004 from the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.

Dubois, whose OU career ended at the 2005 Big 12 Championships in mid May, has been a leader for the Sooners since arriving on campus. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth and given a life expectancy of 18 years, Dubois is a honors student in meteorology and has a 3.74 GPA. She will graduate in May 2006. She helped lead the OU women to their best team finish in school history at the 2004 Big 12 Cross Country Championships.
