Sappleton, who missed the Big 12 Outdoor Championships with an injury and was less than 100 percent during the regional meet, recorded a 1:49.40 to repeat as the 800-meter champion. That time was just under his season best of 1:49.63, a time he recorded at the John Jacobs Invitational in April.
Sappleton was named to the Jamaican National team that will compete in the Central American and Caribbean Senior Athletics Championship July 8-11 in Nassau, Bahamas, where he will try to lower his season best time to the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships. The A standard is 1:45.40 while the B standard is 1:46.60. Should he meet a world qualifying standard, Sappleton will be named to the Jamaican team scheduled to compete in the IAAF World Championships August 8-14 in Helsinki, Finland.
Two former Sooners, Danny McFarlane and Michael Blackwood, earned spots on the Jamaican team for the World Championships during the meet in Kingston. McFarlane finished second in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 48.61 and Blackwood was third in the 400 with a 44.93. Both have met the world qualifying standards and will be on the Jamaican squad in Finland.
The final OU competitor, junior Nicola Maye, finished second overall in the women's 1500 but was first among runners who were entered in the senior division. Maye ran a 4:40. a time just under her season best.
