Sooners Add Five All-Big 12 Honorees in T&F

May 14, 2005 | Track and Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Five Sooners joined the All-Big 12 list and OU runners advanced to finals in six spots during the second day of the ninth annual Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at R.V. Christian Track Complex.

One of those advancing to the final is junior DaBryan Blanton, who will be going for a third consecutive conference title in the 100-meter dash Sunday afternoon. Blanton also advanced to the final in the 200. He had the third fastest time in the 100 and the third fastest time in the 200 on a day when most of the sprint times were wiped out for anything but advancing because of excessive wind readings.

Scott Martin cleared a career best 17-10.5 to finish fourth in the pole vault. The mark ranks sixth on the all-time OU career list. Redshirt sophomore Kevin Bookout recorded his best throw of the competition, 59-2.75, on his last of six throws to finish fifth in the shot put. That mark is a season best by nearly eight inches but falls short of Bookout's career best. Junior Myria Houlihan tied for eighth in the women's high jump with a 5-7, also a season and career best, to earn all-conference honors for the first time in her career.

Senior Dan Strong had a career best effort in the discus and tied another career best mark in the decathlon pole vault to finish seventh in the men's decathlon with 6,666 points. It marks the fourth consecutive conference meet (indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon) for Strong to score in the combined events.

Redshirt junior LaDonna Moore had a strong throw in the heptathlon javelin, then held on during the final event, the 800-meter run, to finish eighth in the women's heptathlon with a 4,855. The mark is the fourth best in school history.

Sophomore Jessica Eldridge will have the opportunity to defend her 800-meter title after advancing to the final with the fourth fastest time. Catherine Odell had the second best time in the 1500 and advanced to that final while a pair of Sooners, Kerri-Ann Mitchell and Yolanda Goff, advanced in the women's 100 with the fourth and sixth best times, respectively. Mitchell's 11.53and Goff's 11.58 are season bests and for Goff, the time is a career best. Goff later added a qualifying time in the 200, recording a career best 23.72 in the preliminaries to finish ninth and just miss advancin to the final. Junior Tony Francis also got an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles. Francis finished ninth with a season best 14.12, just missing a trip to Sunday's final.

Through the second day of finals, Nebraska has the team lead in both the men's and women's standings. OU is 12th on the women's side with 1.33 points and the Sooners are ninth on the men's side with 13 points.

Action resumes at 1 p.m. Sunday with the first three field event finals. Running event finals begin at 3 p.m.
