Sooners Break School Record in 3200-Meter Relay

April 07, 2005 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas Senior Aldwyn Sappleton sprinted the final 200 meters to help the University of Oklahoma men's 3200-meter relay finish third in the event at the 78th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The quartet of Salah Hussein, Brayon Brown, Jason Coleman and Sappleton combined for a 7:24.95 to set a school record in the event Thursday at Myers Stadium.

Senior Dan Strong recorded two career bests and tied another in the decathlon on his way to finishing 10th in the 10-event competition. Strong had a career best two-day total of 6,682, a mark that ranks eighth on the all-time OU career list. He also recorded a career best in the decathlon 110-meter high hurdles with a 15.48 and tied his career best in the decathlon pole vault with a 14-7.25.

Today's effort comes one day after Strong set career bests in four decathlon events on Wednesday as well as a career best first day score on Wednesday.

Hussein ran the first 800 meters for the Sooner men in the relay and recorded a 1:49.6 split. When he handed the baton to Brown, OU was in second place in the race. Brown ran a 1:51.5 for the second leg, then handed to Coleman, who finished the third leg in 1:54.5. OU was in fifth place when Sappleton started his anchor leg. Sappleton moved to an outside lane to get through the pack of runners and sprinted the last 200 meters of the race and just barely missed catching second place Kansas at the finish line.

The school record had stood for 10 years and marks the first school record to fall during the outdoor season.

The Sooner women finished fourth in the 3200-meter relay. The quartet of Catherine Odell, Jessica Eldridge, Clementine McCutchen and Nicola Maye ran 8:57.91. The time ranks as the seventh best in school history. Today's race marked the first outdoor action in a year for Maye, who sat out the 2004 season with an injury.

On Friday, the Sooners will have competitors in the men's and women's 400-meter relays, men's 110-meter high hurdles, the women's 100-meter dash, the men's steeplechase, women's long jump, women's pole vault, women's high jump in Austin. Also on Friday, another group of Sooner athletes will head north to compete in Saturday's Euler State Farm/ESU Relays in Emporia, Kan.
