April 26, 2005 | Track and Field
OU will serve as the host site for the Midwest Region, drawing qualifiers from schools within the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming.
Action will begin at noon on Friday and continue throughout the day Friday. Field events resume at noon on Saturday and conclude with the men's 1600-meter relay at 8:15 p.m.
The other regional sites and the states that feed to that site include East, Manhattan College, host: Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia; the Mideast, Indiana University, host: Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin; and the West, University of Oregon, host: Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
The top five in each individual event and the top three in each relay automatically advance from regional action to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled June 8-11 at Alex G. Spanos Sports Center in Sacramento, Calif. That facility was the host site of the 2003 NCAA meet and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials. After all regional qualifiers have been placed in the national field, at-large entries will be added from the ranking list to get the total number of competitors to the allowed mark of 544 each for men and women.
The men's decathlon, women's heptathlon and men's and women's 10,000-meter run are the only events that do not go through regional qualifying to advance to the NCAA meet. Those events all have automatic and provisional qualifying standards.
This marks the third year for the NCAA Outdoor field to be filled by those who advance from regional action. Nebraska hosted the first NCAA Midwest Regional and Texas A&M served as the host for the 2004 meet. This marks the second major meet for OU to host at the renovated John Jacobs Complex in the last two years. OU was the host school for the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the success of that meet helped OU land the NCAA Regional meet.
The Sooner women tied for third at the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional meet as OU advanced three women and two men from the regional meet to the NCAA meet.
