Plank, Bookout Win at UTA

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Junior Jennifer Plank and redshirt sophomore Kevin Bookout opened the 2005 outdoor season with victories and NCAA Regional qualifying marks Saturday at the 25th annual UTA Invite at Maverick Stadium.

Plank won the women's pole vault with a 12-5.50 and Bookout, who missed the 2004 season after undergoing shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder, won the shot put with a 58-4.50.

The mark for Plank is a career best by two inches and ranks as the third best mark in school history. For Bookout, his winning mark wasn't a career best but it extended a streak that he started in 2003 as a freshman. The mark today was his eighth consecutive time to meet the NCAA Regional qualifying mark.

Another Sooner, senior Kerri Ann Mitchell had the good fortune of running in a heat not affected by excessive winds. Mitchell finished third in the 100-meter dash with an 11.66, an NCAA Regional qualifying time. Sooner teammate Yolanda Goff finished second with an 11.63, also a qualifying mark, but the wind reading in her race was 0.2 over the allowable.

Sophomore Jessica Pekah finished fourth in the discus with a 145-9, marking her second week to improve her career mark. She also moved up to fifth on the all-time OU list with the performance. She threw the discus 137-2 last weekend at the Dr Pepper Invitational in Waco, Texas. Sophomore Cale Drumright also improved his career mark in the javelin throw for the second week, finishing sixth with a 189-11. That mark ranks 10th on the all-time Sooner career list.

The Sooners will compete in a pair of meets next week. Action in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays begins Wednesday. OU athletes who did not qualify for the Texas Relays will travel to Emporia, Kan., for the ESU Relays on Saturday.
