Eldridge Records NCAA Qualifying Time in Mile

NORMAN, Okla.. -- Jessica Eldridge posted a 4:42.73 to finish second in the mile at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday afternoon. More important, the time boosted the Sooner sophomore into 11th place on the NCAA qualifier's list in the mile, virtually assuring her a spot in next weekend's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Eldridge was one of 11 Sooners to compete in qualifying meets on the final weekend that marks to qualify for the 2005 NCAA were held. Of the 11, Eldridge was the only one who improved her chances to participate in the NCAA meet, scheduled for Feb. 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Catherine Odell finished 17th in the mile at South Bend with a 4:56.33 and Brayon Brown was eighth in the 800 with a 1:50.68. Neither of those times improved previously recorded times this season.
Junior Lucretia Rimmer finished eighth in the triple jump at the Virginia Tech Qualifier with a 39-5 but that didn't improve her previous season best, 41-8.50, which is an NCAA provisional mark.
Freshman Marcus Pugh finished sixth in the 60-meter dash at the ISU Qualifier with a 6.84. Pugh has a season best of 6.70, a time he recorded in last week's Big 12 meet, and now must wait until the invitations are issued on Monday to see if he will make a trip to Fayetteville. Pugh recorded a 6.79 in the prelims and a 6.78 in the semifinals at ISU to advance to the final.
Four other Sooners, Kelsey Moore (high jump), Austin Landreth (pole vault), Jason Stanley (60-meter hurdles) and Tony Francis (60-meter hurdles) also did not improve previously recorded season bests at the ISU meet. All have NCAA provisional marks but none are ranked in the top 20 on the NCAA event list. Moore finished fifth with a 5-7.25, Landreth was fourth with a 16-8.75 and Francis was 10th in the hurdles with an 8.02 in the semifinals. Stanley won his preliminary heat with a 7.97 but did not run in the semifinals.
A pair of Sooner women vaulters, Jennifer Plank and Lindsey Bourne, did not record provisional marks in their trip to Ames. Plank finished fifth with a 12-0 and Bourne was eighth with an 11-6.25.
Final declarations for the NCAA meet have to be made by 1 p.m. Monday. The start lists for each event will be announced late Monday. The Sooners have two automatic qualifiers in DaBryan Blanton, who will defend his national title in the 60, and Aldwyn Sappleton, who has the top time in the country in the 800. Scott Martin (pole vault) and Jon McMillian (high jump) have provisional marks but are ranked in the top 10 and should receive invitations to participate. Martin was tied for fourth when weekend action began and McMillian was 10th.
