Sooner Sprinter Named Miss Black OU

NORMAN, Okla. The life of a college student-athlete is always busy. For OU sophomore Ashley Harris, last Saturday was a busier day than most.
The reigning Miss Ebony Homecoming, Harris competed in the 60- and 200-meter dash events Saturday afternoon at the J.D. Martin Invitational. After finishing third in the 200 with a career best time of 25.47, Harris packed up and headed to Meacham Auditorium in the Oklahoma Memorial Union for the annual Miss Black OU pageant, sponsored by OU's Black Student Association.
By the end of the evening, Harris had added that title to her list of accomplishments.
A letters major from Texarkansas, Texas, Harris was named Miss Ebony Homecoming last fall. She was one of six contestants for the Miss Black OU title. The six women were judged on talent. evening gown, swimsuit and projection. Harris sang Lauren Hill's “Ex-Factor” in her part of the talent competition.
A number of her Sooner teammates were in the crowd when Harris was announced as the winner, continuing a tradition of winning by OU track and field athletes in pageants on the Norman campus. Harris will receive a $1,000 scholarship and is eligible to compete for the Miss Black Oklahoma title.
“We are thrilled for Ashley,” said Sooner co-head coaches Rodney Price and Jill Lancaster. “We have always encouraged our student-athletes to be involved in as many campus activities as their academic and competition schedules allow. College life is about more than books and sprints. We believe the more activities our athletes are involved in, the better the whole experience will be for each of them.”
