Tyson Invitational (I)

February 12, 2005 | Track and Field
That time missed the NCAA automatic qualifying mark by .02 seconds.
Sooner freshman Marcus Pugh finished sixth in the 60 and fifth in the 200, recording NCAA provisional qualifying times in both of those events for the first time this season. He had a 6.72 to record the fourth best time in the preliminaries then ran a 21.20 to win his section of the 200.
Scott Martin finished fourth in the championship pole vault with a 17-8.50, another career best and an improved NCAA provisional mark. Jon McMillian improved his season best to 6-11.75 to finish sixth in the high jump.
Kelsey Moore led the OU women, finishing sixth in the high jump after taking first in her flight with a 5-8.75. Lindsey Bourne and Jennifer Plank tied for sixth in the pole vault, clearing 12-2.75
In action late Friday night, former Sooner All-American Laverne Jones returned to the track, competing in the invitational 200 of the Powered by Tyson meet. Jones, who earned All-America honors in the indoor 60 and 200 meters in 2003 and 2004 on the same track, finished third in the 200 invitational final. Running for Nike, Jones finished the race with a 23.83.
Jones finished second in the Big 12 in the 200 as a senior and was eighth in the 200 at the 2004 NCAA Indoor. She set the OU school record in the indoor 200 at 23.16 as a junior while competing in the NCAA Championships. In 2003, Jones became the first Sooner woman to earn All-America honors in two individual events (60 and 200) in one NCAA meet since 1982. When she repeated that feat last March as a Sooner senior, she become the first woman in school history to do it.
