Former Sooner Jones Finishes Third in 200 in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Former Sooner All-American Laverne Jones returned to the track Friday night, competing in the invitational 200 of the Powered by Tyson meet hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Jones, who earned All-America honors in the indoor 60 and 200 meters in 2003 and 2004 on the same track, finished third in the 200 invitational final. Running for Nike, Jones finished the race with a 23.83.
DeeDee Trotter, running for adidas, won the meet with a 23.19. Stephanie Durst of Nike was second with a 23.33 and Marshevet Hook of Texas was fourth with a 23.93.
Jones finished second in the Big 12 in the 200 as a senior and was eighth in the 200 at the 2004 NCAA Indoor. She set the OU school record in the indoor 200 at 23.16 as a junior while competing in the NCAA Championships.
In 2003, Jones became the first Sooner woman to earn All-America honors in two individual events (60 and 200) in one NCAA meet since 1982. When she repeated that feat last March as a Sooner senior, she become the first woman in school history to do it.
Jones, who is finishing her undergraduate degree and serving as a volunteer coach for the Sooners, had a 200 indoor best last year of 23.31, a time she recorded in the prelims at the Big 12 meet.
On Saturday, the current Sooners will take to the track in the meet as OU sent short sprinters, high jumpers, and pole vaulters to Fayetteville.
