January 21, 2005 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. -- After opening the 2005 indoor schedule at the Arkansas Invite last Friday, the Sooners return to Norman to host the first of three indoor track and field meets.

The Oklahoma Classic will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility. Field events will take the spotlight starting at 10 a.m. with the running events scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. All running events, except the 60 dash and 60 hurdles, are set up as finals only and the meet will run on a rolling time schedule.

While their teammates are hosting the home opener, four Sooner pole vaulters, volunteer coach Michael Westlund and pole vault coach Tom Williams are in Reno, Nev., for the annual USATF Pole Vault Summit. Action begins in that meet today but Sooner vaulters, Austin Landreth, Scott Williams, Lindsey Bourne and Jennifer Plank, will probably not begin competition until Saturday. Westlund also will be competing in the open division of the meet.

In the Oklahoma Classic
Joining host Oklahoma in the field are the men's and women's teams from North Texas and Texas-Arlington as well as the women's team from Southern Methodist.

At the 2004 Classic
DaBryan Blanton won the 60-meter dash with an NCAA qualifying mark of 6.62 to highlight the action in the 2004 Oklahoma Track Classic at the Mosier Indoor Center in front of crowd of more than 750. Blanton posted an NCAA provisional mark in the prelims with a 6.70, then lowered his time in the final 30 minutes later. His time of 6.62 was the best time in the country at that point in the season.

The time by Blanton also set a meet and facility record, beating the mark set by Kim Collins of TCU in 2001.

Blanton's performance was just one of several highlights in the meet. It turned into a two team meet as Baylor outscored the Sooner men 41-37. The Bears also won the women's competition, outscoring OU 51.75 to 50.75. TCU was third in the men's team standings followed by Southern Methodist and Texas A&M. TCU also finished third in the women's team standings followed by Texas A&M and Southern Methodist.

OU senior Laverne Jones won the women's 60, posting NCAA provisional qualifying times in the prelims and final. Her time in the prelim of 7.35 was the best time posted in the first round. She dropped her time of 7.31 in the final, missing the automatic qualifying mark by .01 seconds. Her time in the final also was the best time in the country to date.

A total of six meet records were set. In addition to Blanton's and Jones' qualifying marks, another three NCAA provisional marks were set. Baylor's Jeremy Wariner, who set a meet record in the 400 with his winning time of 46.96, and Jerry Harris, who finished second in the 400, both posted NCAA provisional marks as did SMU's Hannes Hopley who won the shot put with a 63-3.5 (19.29 metric).

The Sooners got victories from Nicola Maye, who doubled in the 800 and the mile; Jessica Eldridge, who won the 1000; the women's distance medley (Catherine Odell, Michelle Thomas, Kristi Cook and Eldridge) with a meet record of 11:57.42; Leslie Dunlap in the pole vault; LaDonna Moore in the triple jump; Aldwyn Sappleton in the 600; and Scott Martin and Austin Landreth, who tied for first in the men's pole vault.

At Last Week's Arkansas Invite
Sophomore Scott Martin picked up where he left off last June, winning the men's pole vault title at the Arkansas Invite with an NCAA provisional mark of 17-1. The meet, held at the Randal Tyson Track Center, was the season opener for the Sooners.

Martin was one of two Sooners to earn an NCAA provisional mark. Junior Jason Stanley recorded a 7.84 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles to meet the NCAA standard. He later fi nished third in the event with a 7.88.

The meet also marked the Sooner debut of a number of first time competitors. Two of those athletes, Kerri Ann Mitchell and Marcus Pugh, won their events. Mitchell took the womens 200 with a 24.37 while Pugh won the men's 200 with a 21.41. Both performances earned them spots on OU's all-time career top 10 list.

Another first time Sooner competitor, Brayon Brown, finished fourth in the 800 with a 1:51.88, a time that earned him a spot on the all-time top 10.

Next Up
